Floridians looking to pinch pennies on pencils, parse down the prices on pants, or secure computers for classwork without the customary cash contribution to the state coffers are in luck. Starting Monday, July 29, the Sunshine State kicks off its annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, giving shoppers a break from the sales tax till Sunday, Aug. 11, as reported by Miami-Dade County's official website.
During this budget-friendly period, consumers can nab a bevy of bargains on school essentials. According to the same source, exempt from tax will be: clothing, footwear, and certain accessories priced at $100 or less per item, school supplies at $50 or less per item, also learning aids and jigsaw puzzles carrying a price tag of $30 or less. For the tech-savvy scholar or the college-bound, personal computers and related accessories are tax-free if they’re for noncommercial use and don't exceed $1,500.
However, purchases above the specified price caps – such as clothing over $100, school supplies above $50, or costlier computers and tech accessories – will still incur the usual sales tax. Books not explicitly exempt, alongside items bought for commercial purposes or those requiring rentals, repairs, or alterations, remain taxable. And don’t expect the tax breaks inside the gates of a theme park, a cozy hotel, or while you're hustling through an airport terminal.
For families and students, this tax holiday may ease the financial pressure of back-to-school preparations, providing savings that can be redirected towards other items or squirreled away for a rainy day.
