Gaston County is opening the floor to its residents in a series of public meetings scheduled for August, seeking input on how to allocate funds received from the national opioid settlements. These gatherings are a critical opportunity for local voices to help shape how the approximately $40 million due over the next 18 years will be used to combat the opioid crisis directly impacting their community. This important initiative was detailed in a recent announcement on the county's official website.
The responsibility for crafting recommendations for the expenditure of these funds lies with the Community Support Services (CSS) division of the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services. To pave a way towards community-centric decision-making, CSS staff will conduct three public input meetings. Residents of Gaston County can partake in these events on Aug. 13 at the Mt. Holly Municipal Complex, Aug. 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Gastonia, and Aug. 29 at the Cherryville Community Building, as outlined by the county's announcement.
Since the disbursement began in fiscal year 2022, Gaston County has received over $8.7 million, directing finances to bolster various existing initiatives. Programs such as the Gaston Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) Community Paramedicine Program and Post Overdose Response Team have been among the beneficiaries. Additionally, funds have contributed to accessible Recovery Transportation, peer support services, and subsidized Medication Assisted Treatment for locals grappling with addiction.
The urgency of these investments is underscored by the grim statistics released by GEMS: From 2021 through to the present in 2024, there have been 3,188 reported opioid overdoses in the County, and sadly, between 2021 and 2023 around 326 were fatal. The figures for 2024 are still pending, reinforcing the ongoing nature of this public health challenge. Information about the funded programs and further data on the opioid epidemic in Gaston County can be accessed through the Opioid Settlement Funds dashboard as made available by the county.
