A Guatemalan man received a sentence yesterday for illegally reentering the United States, marking his fourth time facing such charges. Genaro Romero-Romos, 34, pleaded guilty in April and has now been dealt seven months behind bars by a Boston federal court, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts.

Following his prison term, Romero-Romos will undergo a year of supervised release, an anticipation of inevitable deportation proceedings. The announcement came from the Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Todd M. Lyons, of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and, was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan from the Major Crimes Unit.

Romero-Romos' criminal record on U.S. soil includes two previous sentences related to immigration offenses along with multiple deportations. The sequence of events leading to his most recent arrest commenced in November 2023, after being apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, an event that drew the attention of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to his unlawful presence stateside.

This case has once again highlighted the contentious nature of immigration enforcement and the repetitive cycles of deportation, and reentry that many individuals endure. The sentence was delivered by U.S. Senior District Judge William G. Young who, is no stranger to presiding over immigration-related offenses. The legal proceedings are a stark encapsulation of the challenges inherent in enforcing U.S. immigration law.
