A tragic high-speed collision in suburban Kane County left three teenagers with serious injuries over the Fourth of July weekend. The Kane County Sheriff's Office reported that the single-vehicle accident involved a car slamming into a tree on Dietrich Road in Hampshire Township on Friday evening.
The driver, a 16-year-old from Huntley, was allegedly attempting to speedily navigate the eastbound lane of Dietrich Road when he lost control, causing the vehicle to briefly go airborne before re-entering the roadway, as detailed by Lake & McHenry County Scanner. It then skidded sideways and horrifically collided with a tree.
First responders from the Huntley Fire Protection District had to exert considerable efforts, taking approximately 45 minutes to extricate the trapped passengers, two 14-year-old boys from Lake in the Hills. One boy had to be airlifted to a Chicago hospital after sustaining life-threatening head and torso injuries. The other passenger, also requiring urgent care from an aerial medical service, suffered a broken leg. "Firefighters worked for approximately 45 minutes to free both of them from the wreckage," reported Michael Pierce, Battalion Chief of Huntley Fire Protection District.
The driver suffered a concussion among other serious injuries and is currently hospitalized. Meanwhile, there's a looming silence over possible charges or citations, as there was no immediate information available on such matters. However, video evidence of the mishap has surfaced, with witnesses coming forward to provide footage to the authorities, as noted by NBC Chicago.
