For those of you who were gearing up to swim, bike, and run your way through the scenic Tippecanoe River State Park this weekend, you’ll have to find another way to indulge in your triathlon fantasies. The eagerly anticipated Tippy Tri-Challenge, which was set to take place on Saturday, has been canceled. Blame it on the forces of nature – officials have pinned the cause on high water conditions that have rendered the course unsafe for participants.
Details of the now-shelved event, as listed on the Indiana State's official events page, showcased an idyllic excursion starting with either a 1-mile hike/run or a longer 2.5-mile course weaving through the park's various trails, leading adventurers from the Nature Center up to the Fire Tower. From there, the course transitioned to a bike segment, challenging participants to a 4-mile ride to the River Tent Boat Launch, followed by a paddle down the serene Tippecanoe River for an another 3 miles back to the start point.
Registration for the event, which was open from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Park Office, was cornered at a modest $10, cash only—an absolute steal by today's standards. The race was scheduled to start bright and early at 9:00 a.m. With everything prepped for a combination of endurance and natural splendor, it’s a real bummer that Mother Nature had other plans.
Officials have not provided information on whether the Tippy Tri-Challenge will be rescheduled or if there will be refunds issued for those who had already registered. Athletes and nature enthusiasts alike were looking forward to the unique triathlon experience, one that swapped out the traditional swim leg for a paddle down the river. Until further details emerge, would-be competitors will have to sit tight or look to other venues for their multi-sport kicks.
