A homicide investigation is currently taking place at a parking lot outside the ISSO Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Temple on Middlesex Street in Lowell, Massachusetts. According to WHDH, the incident occurred Saturday morning and is centered on the temple's parking area.
Law enforcement officials have cordoned off the scene with yellow tape as they document the area, with reports indicating that the victim was involved in a shooting. The temple, which was unrelated to the violence, was gearing up for a significant religious event that was expected to draw thousands, as per the information acquired from WHDH. Officers were on-site by 9 a.m., utilizing cameras to capture the unfolding scene, and the crushing weight of tragedy already pervaded the space.
Local observers revealed to Boston 25 News that the area is often a hub for late-night gatherings, commonly used due to its expansive emptiness after dark. Wendy Porter, a birdwatcher familiar with the area, expressed her disbelief to reporters: "It's sad. I wouldn't expect it over here," lamenting the disruption of peace in what she thought a safe space.
Another person told Boston 25 News’s Joanna Bouras about witnessing two individuals, possibly struck by gunfire, on the ground bleeding earlier in the morning. Instead of the planned peaceful worship, those arriving for the event were barred entrance to the parking area, their spiritual reprieve cut short by the unforeseen violence, their prayers subjected to an unscheduled pause. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office has stepped in to assist with the investigation, though details remain sparse at this moment.
Authorities have yet to release definitive details about the identities of those involved or the circumstances leading up to the shooting. As the community reels from the shock, the story continues to develop and Boston 25 News is reaching out to state and local officials for further information.
