A tragic series of events unfolded late last month in Las Vegas, culminating in the loss of a pedestrian's life and further igniting the ongoing conversation about traffic safety in the city. According to a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), a multi-vehicle collision led to the pedestrian's severe injuries and eventual death, marking the 88th traffic-related fatality within LVMPD's area of responsibility for the year.
The incident occurred on July 19, when, as reports indicate, a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 35-year-old Jessica Carreon, apparently did not obey a red turn arrow and turned left into the path of a southbound Lexus GS 350, driven by 41-year-old Michael Woods, which was proceeding through a green light. The resulting crash forced the Chevrolet onto the sidewalk, striking a 36-year-old female pedestrian. Carreon, who displayed signs of impairment, was subsequently arrested on DUI-related charges, while the pedestrian was taken to UMC Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, which she eventually succumbed to, ten days later.
The drivers of both vehicles were also treated for injuries at UMC Trauma Center. Woods, who did not show signs of impairment at the time, suffered claimed injuries. Carreon was admitted for moderate injuries. All efforts notwithstanding, the pedestrian, whose identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, did not survive the ordeal, her injuries proving too great to overcome.
