In a notable case of commercial misrepresentation, Honest Abe Auto Sales, an Indianapolis-based used car dealer, has been ordered to pay nearly half a million dollars to customers following a legal settlement. The Indiana Attorney General, Todd Rokita, took action against the company, citing deceptive advertising practices specifically targeting individuals with bad credit, FOX59 reports.
Filed in Marion County Superior Court, the suit alleged the dealer engaged in bait-and-switch sales tactics, where advertised vehicle prices were increased, at the point of purchase, by thousands of dollars for customers with subprime credit. The establishment, whose branding pays homage to President Abraham Lincoln's storied moniker, is accused of behavior well out of line with their namesake's legacy. In the wake of the outcome, Rokita said, "We won’t tolerate businesses breaking the law and duping Hoosiers into paying higher prices than advertised," according to a statement obtained by FOX59.
The lawsuit resulted in Honest Abe Auto Sales being mandated to reimburse $470,646 to aggrieved parties. Furthermore, the dealership, which falls under the umbrella of Sycamore Companies, LLC and operates four locations across Indianapolis, has been barred from employing similar deceptive sales strategies in the future. Over 250 individuals reported being affected by the dealership's questionable practices, echoing concerns raised in previous litigation; the company has seen at least eight lawsuits from individual customers since 2006, WTHR notes.
The wider political landscape is charged with the events of the Republican National Convention. The convention, now in its third day, has the GOP, with former President Donald Trump and Vice Presidential nominee U.S. Sen. JD Vance at the helm, shifting focus onto national security and the current administration's handling of international affairs. U.S. Representative Adam Schiff has urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the election, amidst these tangible tensions and ongoing crises abroad, CBS4 Indy reported.
