A 65-year-old driver experienced an alarming accident this past Sunday when his vehicle was found in Williams Creek on Indianapolis's north side. The car, having traveled approximately 500 feet through a wooded area and hitting two trees, was retrieved from the creek with the man inside by the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD).
Following reports of a crash at around 5:30 p.m. near West 79th Street and North Meridian Street, first responders arrived to discover the vehicle wheels down in the creek near the bridge. According to WRTV, the vehicle had to quickly be secured with a tether by IFD's water rescue task force to prevent it from moving further downstream. The incident did not seriously injure the senior driver.
According to a Facebook post from IFD referenced by FOX59, the driver of the car was alert and oriented when the emergency crews arrived. Within 10 minutes, divers managed to safely help the man out of the submerged vehicle.
The IFD's swift and coordinated response enabled the driver to be loaded onto a stokes basket and carried up a hill through the wooded terrain. CBS4 reports that afterwards, the man was transported in stable condition to a local hospital, as the IFD firmly stated. The efficient work of the responders prevented what could have easily become a more tragic outcome.
