
A violent encounter rattled the Little Village neighborhood in Chicago on a Saturday afternoon, leaving a three-month-old infant and a 21-year-old man, the boy's father, in critical condition after they were shot in a vehicular attack, as reported by Chicago Tribune and CBS News Chicago. The incident occurred in the 3100 block of West 26th Street just after 4:30 p.m., when, according to police, two gunmen emerged from another vehicle and opened fire into the car containing the victims.
The area, known for its vibrancy and small businesses, became a crime scene with gunfire erupting outside several establishments; the young child received a shot to the chest, while his father was hit four times on the right side, and though they were initially taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, the infant was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, "both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition," a police officer said on the scene. Meanwhile, the shooters fled and have not been apprehended, and as Chicago police detectives continue their inquiry, no arrests have been announced yet, the shooting could be gang-related, as per local authorities.
Details collected from the scene also included the presence of the baby's mother inside the car, though it remains unclear if she sustained any injuries during the attack, the baby's mother was also in the vehicle, but it was unclear if she was injured, a witness described her proximity to the event as mere yards, stating to CBS News Chicago her distress and hesitation to speak out fearing further discord in the community, "She said she was traumatized and conflicted about speaking about the situation because she does not want more problems for her neighborhood."
