An investigation is currently underway in Elgin, a suburb of Chicago, following a shooting that involved an off-duty police officer. The incident occurred Monday afternoon around 4:35 p.m. near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and National Street, and it has been confirmed that the officer in question is not a member of the Elgin Police Department. The scene was quickly swathed in the blue and red lights of responding vehicles, and the area was sealed off to the public as officials began their inquiry into what transpired.
Witness accounts shed some light on the chaotic moments that unfolded; a witness, interviewed by NBC Chicago, described hearing a series of gunshots, "Suddenly I heard six, seven shots," adding a sense of urgency to the situation on the ground. The same witness noted the actions of a police officer who appeared to be aiding a child, "All we saw, there was a cop helping the child, like he was struggling or some stuff like that. The cop was trying to save that child."
Details surrounding the shooting remain sparse at this stage; however, the Elgin Police Department has made it clear through a Facebook post that none of their officers were involved. The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force has taken the helm of the investigation. Lakshay Chauhay, manager of the Mobil gas station across from the shooting site, recounted the sudden disturbance to Chicago Tribune, saying, "We heard screaming so we came (outside)," noting the fleetness of the event, "Everything happened so fast." As the night descended and the thoroughfare at Walnut and National remained cordoned off, the community awaited further disclosures from authorities, which, up till now, have held back specifics as they piece together the narrative of another page in the ever-unfolding story of American violence.
