A Lee County man, identified as Tommy Clinton Jones, 47, has been arrested and charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) for the death of his father, Tommy Lee Jones, 69. GBI's press release states Jones faces one count of Felony Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault.
The investigation kicked off early Independence Day, with a distress call about shots fired leading to a standoff between Lee County Sheriff's deputies and the suspect. It was approximately 3:15 a.m., deputies urgently responding to a home on the 1400 block of Smithville Road in Leesburg. Upon arrival, more gunfire was heard inside the residence, prompting deputies to engage and to convince Jones to surrender. According to the GBI's press release, Jones eventually emerged and was detained, and a firearm was secured at the scene.
GBI emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing. The public is urged to come forward with any relevant information, which can be submitted anonymously via phone at 1-800-597-TIPS(8477), or online through the agency's website or the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
