A tragic townhome fire on Chupp Road in Lithonia took the life of a woman yesterday. The DeKalb County Fire Department responded to the blaze that erupted at around 10:20 a.m., subsequently leading to the death of 62-year-old Ga Juan Sanders and hospitalization of her brother, who managed to escape, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
According to Jaeson Daniels, a public information officer with the DeKalb County Fire Department, the brother was able to self-rescue but tragically was unable to save his sister. Neighbors identified the woman who died in the Chupp Road fire, as noted by 11Alive. The brother, an elderly man, sustained injuries and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
Vincent Sanders, distraught by the events, remembered his sister as "outgoing, kindhearted," during an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta. The siblings, who lived together for at least five years, occupied the townhome that became an inferno leading to the unfortunate event. While the exact cause of the fire is still unknown, authorities suspect that extreme smoke inhalation was the cause of Ms. Sanders' demise.
The loss has reverberated through the community, with neighbors mourning the woman they affectionately knew. Valerie Davis, who resides a few doors from the incident and spoke with the brother before his hospitalization, mentioned his unsuccessful efforts to save his sister: "He said, 'I couldn't get her out. I couldn't save her.' He said, 'I tried,' because his nose was burnt." Lesha Osias, Davis' daughter, lamented the loss of her friend, telling 11Alive, "I won’t have my friend anymore." Ga Juan Sanders, whom neighbors said referred to herself as the "Queen of Lithonia," had planned to move to a new residence on Friday, July 5, 2024, just days after the tragic fire, looking forward to a new beginning.
