As the people of San Joaquin County prepare to celebrate Independence Day, the waterfront revelry at Lodi Lake will be tainted by an unwelcome visitor: high levels of bacteria. Routine testing by city officials has revealed "elevated levels of bacteria" in Lodi Lake, leading to the prohibition of swimming in its waters. According to FOX40, the lake closure will remain in effect until further notice, starting this Wednesday.
Despite the closure of the lake to swimmers, the city aims to ensure that the Fourth of July festivities will persist, albeit with some modifications. As reported by CBS News Sacramento, the city has made arrangements for attendees to still be able to quickly find a reprieve from the heat at the beach and wading pool areas that are still open. Additionally, water enthusiasts can temporarily trade in their lake swimsuits for pool gear as the Enze Pool, located approximately 4 miles southeast, will specifically be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m on the holiday.
Lodi's officials have pinpointed the culprit behind the bacterial spike as the recent string of high temperatures that have hit the area. Swimmers will have to bide their time until the bacteria levels subside to safer readings. In the meantime, the City of Lodi ensures that Lodi Boathouse rentals will not be affected by this closure, allowing for certain water-based recreational activities to continue.
The announcement of the closure comes as a sudden hiccup to the American Festival scheduled for July 4th at Lodi Lake. The celebration is still set to go forth as planned, although "swimming in the lake will be prohibited," as stated by FOX40. City officials have promptly adjusted to the situation, being careful to not cancel the entirety of the events surrounding the national holiday. In addition to the events, fenced-off areas and ongoing construction at Lodi Lake might further impact how visitors can to navigate around the lake and the adjacent nature area until the upcoming Friday, July 5.
