Downtown Sacramento just lost a familiar taproom. Frends Brewhouse has closed its restaurant at 828 J St, and the future of its Elk Grove location now appears uncertain, erasing one of the chain's more prominent casual-dining and brewhouse options from the city center.
What reporters found
According to the Sacramento Business Journal, the 828 J St location has shut its doors, and the outlet reported that the Elk Grove restaurant's future is unclear. The Business Journal published its report on July 20, 2026.
Frends' official website, however, still lists the Downtown address and hours alongside locations in Natomas, Folsom and Elk Grove, a sign that the company has not yet updated its public pages. The site also continues to display a phone number for the Downtown restaurant and a reservations link.
Chain background
Court filings show JIB Foods Inc., the company behind Pete's Restaurant & Brewhouse, filed a Subchapter V Chapter 11 petition in February 2026, according to Inforuptcy. Local reporting has documented a spate of Pete's closures and conversions to Frends Brewhouse in recent months, The Sacramento Bee reported. That history helps explain why operators in the Pete's and Frends family have been reshaping their footprint across the region.
What’s next
At this writing, Frends' site contains no public notice explaining a Downtown closure and the chain's locations page still lists the J Street address. This story will be updated if the company or the property owner issues a statement or if a new listing appears.
