While the Larch Creek Fire continues its destructive path through Wasco County, some evacuated areas are facing a new threat—looters. Residents and local officials report that properties left empty as families fled the advancing flames are now being targeted by opportunistic thieves, taking advantage of the chaos and the community's distress. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office has responded to the situation, underscoring their commitment to law enforcement despite the challenging circumstances. “We ask the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in evacuated areas by calling our non-emergency number [541-296-5454] so that we can dispatch a deputy to investigate immediately,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, as per KOIN. They emphasized that "looting during a natural disaster is a serious crime and will not be tolerated."
Looting reports come a week after the wildfire compelled residents near Dufur and south of The Dalles to leave their homes. Even as firefighters battle the blaze, law enforcement is also urging the public to keep eyes peeled for illegal activity in these vulnerable areas. Sheriff Lane MaGill reiterated the gravity of the situation, according to a KPTV report, “Looting during a natural disaster is a serious crime and it will not be tolerated,” and he underscored their commitment, “We are committed to protecting the property of those who have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the Larch Creek Fire.”
Since erupting on July 9, the Larch Creek Fire has scorched at least 18,684 acres and is at 14% containment. Despite the fire's growth and the subsequent increase in the personnel and resources drawn from across Oregon, no lives or structures have been officially reported lost to the flames as of the latest announcements. Governor Tina Kotek had earlier issued an emergency declaration which accelerated the firefighting responses that include fire lines, hose lays, and air attacks.
