As economic revitalization continues to take shape along the Detroit waterfront, a notable development is emerging on the historic grounds once occupied by Joe Louis Arena. A new luxury JW Marriott hotel, featuring 600 rooms over 25 stories, is slated to open its doors in 2027, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. The hotel will be part of a larger precinct known as Water Square, which also includes the recently inaugurated Residences at Water Square alongside planned public amenities like a park with riverfront views.
In a move anticipated to bolster the city's capacity for hosting large-scale conventions and events, the Marriott hotel will be directly connected to the Huntington Place Convention Center via a sky bridge, Danny Samson, Chief Development Officer of Sterling Group stated, as per FOX 2 Detroit. This setup is expected to attract major gatherings that can leverage the space and luxury services, pouring an estimated $100 million in new spending annually into the local economy. The strategic positioning of the hotel is not just a nod to growth but also an homage, marking a key space where the Detroit Red Wings hockey team once held the city's spirit aloft through sportsmanship and the spirit of competition.
Financing for this ambitious project, which began construction earlier this year, stems from the Union Labor Life Insurance Company (Ullico), continuing a partnership that has supported the region's development endeavors, Brian J. Hale, CEO and President of Ullico Inc. conveyed pride in investing in Detroit, noting the role of their J for Jobs program in harnessing the economic power of the labor movement and backing local economies, according to an article by WXYZ.
