A community in mourning gathered to remember the life of 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson, who was tragically killed during a shooting at Alderwood Mall. Friends, family, and members of the Lynnwood community held a vigil to pay tribute to Woods-Johnson, whose life was cut short by a stray bullet during an altercation between two groups of teenagers. Macy Nearing, a close friend of the victim, expressed her sorrow, telling FOX 13 Seattle, "I miss her voice, being around her, I miss her positivity".
As the grieving process unfolds, Cali Johnson, Woods-Johnson’s older cousin, fluctuates between shock and a profound sense of loss. She mused the surreal nature of the tragedy in a statement obtained by KING 5 News, "It goes back and forth between devastation, and almost like a dreamlike state where I'm like, 'This can't be right'". Recalling Jayda’s infectious joy and humor, she added, "She would just be cracking everybody up, making everybody laugh and smile".
Alderwood’s community is reeling from the impact of this unforeseen violence, seeking ways to heal and prevent future tragedies. During the vigil, frustration was palpable among the attendees, particularly concerning the 16-year-old shooting suspect's ability to post bail shortly after the incident. Echoing the community's call for action, Lynnwood City Councilmember George Hurst committed to pursuing both immediate and long-term solutions to combat gun violence, as reported by KOMO News.
Remembered for her bold personality and leadership qualities, even at a young age, Woods-Johnson is also missed for her aspirations and warmth. "She was a very strong leader, even at her young age, and in such a playful way," said Cali Huffman via KOMO News, a cousin who held Jayda in sisterly regard. Huffman shared these thoughts at the vigil, where hundreds came to celebrate Jayda’s life.
