Deonta Williams, the man accused of a calculated attack on two IMPD officers in 2021, has been sentenced to 66 years in prison, according to WRTV.com. Williams pled guilty to two counts of Attempted Murder and one count of Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon following an incident where he used a fake 911 call to lure the officers and subsequently stabbed them.
On the night of December 1, 2021, Williams directed the responding officers to a supposed harasser's location before turning on them with a knife, an officer was stabbed in the chest, and the other's neck was slashed with the wound perilously close to his jugular, as outlined in court documents referenced by WTHR.
What motivated Williams to commit such an act appears rooted in despair and retribution; he reportedly told investigators his intention was to kill an officer, telling them it was "all over a medical bill he couldn’t afford and that killing an officer would allow him to 'get his own justice'," a dark sentiment sourced from an interview highlighted by WIBC.
In the wake of this violent episode, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears praised the officers' bravery, saying, “The officers were simply answering the call to help someone in need when they were horrifically attacked,” and that "thanks to their brave response, the defendant was quickly subdued and unable to harm anyone else" this statement from a WIBC report reflects a grim reality where public servants faced an unexpected assault while in the service of their community.
