An attempt to swindle a Massachusetts resident out of $21,000 was thwarted by the combined reflexes of the would-be victim and the timely intervention of the Blackstone Police Department. The scam began with a deceptive message on the resident's tablet urging a call to customer support. Officials said the victim was persuaded over the phone that their account was compromised and was instructed to withdraw and hand over the cash to a "special agent" to reclaim their account, as reported by Masslive.
The implicated 37-year-old man, who police did not name, was arrested in a sting operation after the elder resident got cold feet about the transaction and sought police assistance on Friday morning. Despite setting up the time and removing about $21,000 from their bank account, the Massachusetts resident didn't lose any money, the police revealed. The suspect is facing several charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime to wit larceny by false pretense, and is set for arraignment in Uxbridge District Court.
In a separate press release from the Blackstone Police Department hosted on JGPR.net, it was reported that the department responded to a series of incidents over the same weekend. Among these incidents were multiple car break-ins and burglaries that affected businesses such as First Choice Dispensary and Casa Burrito. Two juveniles, aged 15 and 17, were identified and charged with an assortment of offenses ranging from larceny to trespassing.
The Blackstone community, shaken over the weekend by the slew of illicit activities, has since seen a glimpse of justice. Thanks to surveillance footage and the cooperation of the public, police were able to charge the two juveniles with offenses that bring the pressing issue of youth delinquency to the forefront, while the elder scam was quickly contained with no financial damage inflicted upon the would-be victim due to the quick response of police. The department expressed gratitude towards public assistance which played a crucial role in the arrest of the suspects, emphasizing that even though charged, all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
