The Memphis Police Department is currently investigating an incident in which a police officer was reportedly shot at by a suspect in the early hours of the morning in North Memphis. According to Action News 5, a gunshot was fired around 3:59 a.m. when an on-duty officer responded to a shots fired call near Matthews Avenue.
The confrontation occurred when the officer, who was en route to a service call, saw a vehicle speeding past Springdale Street. The vehicle quickly turned onto Matthews Avenue, prompting the officer to stop at the intersection in an effort to ascertain the vehicle's next move. It was at this point, a passenger from the suspect car alighted and discharged a firearm towards the officer, as reported by Local Memphis 24.
Fortunately, neither the officer nor the squad car was struck by the gunfire, and the officer did not return fire. The suspect and the vehicle in question, described as a dark-colored Nissan sedan, fled the scene and have yet to be apprehended. The Memphis Police Department urges anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH, according to details provided by WREG News Channel 3.
