A 52-year-old Miami man with a history as a sex offender has been charged with election crimes after authorities said he submitted a false voter registration application and then voted illegally. Victor Marshall Nash, identified as a registered sex offender following a conviction for felony sexual battery on a victim aged 12 years or older in 2001, now faces accusations of unlawful voting.
According to reports from CBS12, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrested Nash on July 18. Held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Nash is accused of having cast ballots in elections without having his civil rights restored. Arrested for illegally voting by the Miami-Dade Police Department, any chance at a fair trial Nash might have is up to the justice system now.
This development is part of a larger crackdown on election-related offenses in Florida. In the course of this year, the FDLE's Election Crime Unit has charged 12 individuals with various infractions including petition fraud. The case against Nash is set to be prosecuted by Attorney General Ashley Moody’s Office of Statewide Prosecision, as Nash never saw the restoration of his civil rights post-conviction.
Meanwhile, the Local10 news outlet reports that the FDLE revealed Nash's alleged illegal activity after an investigation involving the Florida Department of State Office of Election Crimes and Security (OECS). "Nash has never received his restoration of civil rights," the FDLE stated in their findings, suggesting that the infractions for Nash go beyond just the act of illegal voting.
