San Antonio's search for a new leader of the Animal Care Services Department (ACS) has taken a turn with the appointment of an interim director. Announced by City Manager Erik Walsh, Michael Shannon will fill the role from July 15, ensuring ACS doesn't skip a beat in providing essential services and resources to both pets and their human companions. Walsh noted in a statement obtained by City of San Antonio website, "Michael is a proven executive with the management and leadership experience to help in this interim period."
While noting that the recruitment process for a permanent director continues, Walsh highlighted the credentials of Shannon, who has spent 22 years at the city. Michael Shannon has a combined resume including engineering expertise and animal welfare engagement, serving as director of the Development Services Department (DSD) since 2017 and being a former member of the ACS board. According to his job description, he was responsible for a wide array of services ranging from land development to graffiti abatement.
The importance of the ACS Director role cannot be understated in a community that values its animal population. The City's commitment, as described by Walsh, is to find a leader that possesses the experience, values and vision to lead the department forward to provide exceptional, compassionate care and education. The ideal candidate will be expected to engage with local animal care stakeholders, encourage a thriving work environment, and support pet placements while focusing on enforcement.
Amin Tohmaz, who also holds a significant treasure trove of certifications including a Certified Building Official title, will serve as the Interim Director of DSD while Shannon works with ACS. Tohmaz has been a part of the department since 2017, climbing up the ranks from Assistant to Deputy Director. His experience will be crucial in overseeing DSD's critical operations such as zoning and code enforcement in Shannon's stead.
