The City of Minneapolis is now offering a helpful hand to residents struggling with transit costs. The Minneapolis Service Center has opened its doors to Metro Transit riders looking to enroll in the Transit Assistance Program (TAP), a move endorsed by the City Council.

Transportation just got more affordable for those pinching pennies. Lending a crucial lifeline to low-income residents, the program provides a gateway to more equitable travel. Located in the thick of downtown, near the bustling Government Center and handy light rail lines, the Service Center's new role was announced this June and is a beacon for thousands seeking easier access to public transportation.

A statement from Breanna Phelps, Operations Manager for Minneapolis's 311 Service Center, highlights the initiative, "At the Minneapolis Service Center, we provide important City services to all residents and visitors to meet their wide variety of needs, including removing language barriers and addressing accessibility challenges. Our partnership with Metro Transit gives us the opportunity to further serve and better reach community members in a way that goes beyond just City services."

The TAP program isn't just a discount card; it's a lifeline for qualifying residents, who can now travel to work or school, for only $1 for each ride. Touted by Andrea Kiepe, TAP Coordinator for Metro Transit, the new signup method is as simple as showing a paystub or tax return. "We are thrilled the City of Minneapolis is now our largest community partner," she said, believing the TAP’s new accessibility "makes TAP more accessible and equitable for metro area residents," she told the City of Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis Service Center, a central hub for city services, further dignifies its role in the community with this collaboration. "We are excited to play a crucial role in supporting our community members through the TAP program by expanding its reach at the Minneapolis Service Center. This collaboration underscores our city's commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable transportation system," shared Mwende Nzimbi, Director of the 311 Service Center department, in a recent update.
