The Maui Police Department has successfully located Mimmie "Mele" Hoffman, the 81-year-old Kahului resident who had been reported missing since Tuesday, July 16, according to a recent Facebook post by Maui Police Department. The brief update, released on Wednesday, July 17, expressed the department's gratitude to the public for their assistance upon her safe return, though the circumstances of Hoffman's disappearance and the details of her discovery were not disclosed.
Prior to her location, the Maui Police Department made public pleas for assistance in finding Hoffman, who was last seen leaving her residence at around 9:00 a.m. on the day she went missing, she has grey hair and brown eyes and it's known that she likes to frequent areas like the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center and Kahului Library — spaces woven into her routine and perhaps holding the invisible threads of her community engagement. She was described as Japanese, 4-foot-1, weighs about 89 pounds, without a cellular phone, raising even greater concern for her safety and well-being among her family and law enforcement alike.
A previous report published by Hoodline highlighted the anxiety her family faced, noting their particular worry given Hoffman's age. Officials had urged anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact the Maui Police Department at their non-emergency number or to dial 911 in the event of an emergency, providing a report number for reference.
