A Muncie doctor, William Hedrick, has been sentenced to a five-year prison term after entering pleas of guilty to multiple felony charges, including the unlawful dispensation of a controlled substance and Medicaid fraud. The sentence was handed down on Friday, July 19, as reported by FOX59. Hedrick also pleaded guilty to charges of obstruction of justice and harassment through telegraph, mail, or written communication.
In 2018, during His tenure at the Centers for Pain Relief in Muncie, Hedrick was found guilty on three counts each of forgery and prescription-related registration offenses. Alongside these confirmations of guilt, Delaware County officials implicated Hedrick in the deaths of eight people whom he had overprescribed medication, a grievous mishandling of his duty to do no harm, as stated in a report by My Wabash Valley.
Prior to the closing of his nine clinics across Indiana in November 2014, Hedrick's medical practices had been under scrutiny. It is documented that at least eight fatalities occurred while patients were seeking treatment from him. This haunting tally led to the incisive legal actions taken against the doctor, aiming to bring a measure of justice and closure to the victims' families and the community at large.
Details on the case reveal that authorities had been building a case against the Muncie doctor for an extended period. In an effort to curb what has become a national opioid crisis, vigilance against unlawful prescription practices has increased significantly. This sentencing reflects a growing intolerance for medical professionals who breach the trust placed upon them and the ever-present vigil maintained over our most vulnerable institutions, as noted by WRTV.
