Diaz and Williams were both taken to Skyline Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. MNPD released body camera footage showing the moments leading up to the shooting, where several undercover officers surrounded a car that Williams and a woman were seen getting into, as per WSMV. The video, which Metro Police released to YouTube, shows Williams reportedly pulling out a pistol and opening fire as officers converged on the vehicle.
Williams, 31, was indicted for the fatal shooting of Samuel L. Edwards Jr., 32, at a separate apartment complex on Buena Vista Pike on March 4. In a statement obtained by WSMV, MNPD Chief John Drake emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This individual had killed someone and had no regard for life."
The MNPD's specialized TITANS unit, which focuses on the most violent shooting suspects, had been searching for Williams for several days. Their efforts led them to the location where the shootout occurred. Following the standard protocol, Diaz and Detective Joseph Gonzales, also involved in the shooting, have been placed on routine administrative assignment during the investigation of the shooting, as Fox 17 reports. Diaz has since been released from the hospital, confirmed by a MNPD social media post.
