A 43-year-old man, Sterling L. Jenkins, is facing multiple charges after being involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on Myatt Drive at Roosevelt Avenue, according to Nashville authorities. The collision, which took place Sunday evening, claimed the life of Gregory Torrance Sr., a 65-year-old Nashville resident. Metro Nashville Police Department reports indicate Torrance was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk and utilizing a motorized wheelchair when he was struck.
Following the incident, Jenkins, who was driving a Nissan Armada, failed to stop and offer aid to the victim, instead continued driving to a local Thorntons store where he inspected his vehicle for damage, surveillance video footage displayed Jenkins' subsequent actions as he assessed his SUV before leaving the scene and driving to his residence at Canton Pass, after which, a detective traced the damaged vehicle's path from the distinctive marks its brake caliper left on the roadway. Torrance was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Jenkins has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, failure to render aid, and not having valid insurance at the time of the collision. He turned himself over to the police following the accident and during interrogation, admitted his involvement in the collision, acknowledging he was aware that he had hit something, according to police statements. Jenkins is currently out on a $12,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing but the initial assessment suggests that the accident was primarily caused by Jenkins' failure to yield the right of way to Torrance while he was in the wheelchair.
