A tragic event unfolded on Sunday when a collision in Madison resulted in the death of a man using a motorized wheelchair. WSMV reports that the individual, Gregory Torrance Sr., aged 65, was struck while crossing an unmarked crosswalk at the intersection of Myatt Drive and Roosevelt Avenue around 8:45 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics with the Nashville Fire Department.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) initiated a search following a trail of scrapes on the road caused by a damaged brake caliper. They led them to a residence approximately 2.5 miles from the crash site. There, officers uncovered a purple Nissan Armada with significant damage to the front end. The vehicle was believed to be involved in the crash, WSMV detailed. Sterling Jenkins, 43, admitted to officers that he had hit something but claimed he did not know what he had collided with.
Following the accident, Jenkins drove to a gas station where surveillance footage, mentioned in the MNPD's court documents, captured him assessing the vehicle's damage before leaving the scene. FOX 17 showed Jenkins’ subsequent arrest and his facing of multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident involving death, failure to render aid, failure to file a report, and failing to report financial responsibility — a shorthand term often used in such cases for not having insurance.
Jenkins was able to post a $12,000 bond to secure his release despite the gravity of the accusations against him, such as the MNPD's preliminary assessment that attributes the crash to Jenkins’ failure to yield the right of way to the pedestrian, as per FOX 17.
