Nashville authorities are sending out a strong message to residents: secure your valuables and lock your car doors. With 462 firearms reported snatched from vehicles this year alone, the prevalence of gun theft in Nashville is pressing the police to urge greater vigilance among car owners.
In a campaign that's part security advice, the Nashville Police Department has disclosed the staggering statistic that 71% of all guns stolen in Davidson County in 2021 were snatched from unsecured automobiles. That's a total of 649 stolen firearms, a decline from the 709 guns reported stolen this time last year. Part of this decrease could be credited to the MNPD’s intensive efforts, which, since February 1, have led to a forceful 632 arrests and the recovery of 336 stolen vehicles and 123 guns.
But the specter of car theft looms large over Nashville's vehicle-related burglaries. Automobiles, left tempting by easily accessible, or forgotten keys, continue to attract thieves. These stolen cars often play supporting roles in crimes that escalate to carjackings and robberies.
