At the recent National Association of Counties (NACo) conference held in Hillsborough County, a service project coined "Duffels of Dignity" transformed the usual networking event into a moment of heartwarming community service. Nearly 3,000 attendees were in attendance from July 12-15, yet it wasn't the government best practices or the opportunity to meet with fellow public servants that held the spotlight, but rather the collective effort to provide for the youth in foster care. Hillsborough County reported that 297 duffel bags, each stuffed with personal care items and a teddy bear, were prepared to support these young individuals facing great challenges.
The act of stuffing duffel bags, while mingling over the challenges of county governance, allowed attendees to also fulfill a need that goes beyond policy debates and paperwork. According to the same Hillsborough County announcement, 115 volunteers from the conference came together. They filled the bags with care, setting aside time from the busy conference schedule to focus on providing a small token of comfort for kids they have never met, but whose lives they hoped to impact positively.
The duffels, now ready for their new owners, are more than just fabric and zippers. They symbolize a fresh start, carrying essential items that might offer a sense of normalcy in a young life riddled with uncertainty. The initiative ensured that each child would receive something of their own as they navigate the often turbulent waters of the foster care system.
Once distributed, organizations throughout Hillsborough County will be the ones to hand out these tokens of hope to the children under their care. Organizers emphasize the importance of the duffel bags, as they serve to restore a bit of dignity for those entering foster care, many of whom carry their lives in trash bags when they move from home to home. This small gesture is an attempt to shift that narrative, imbuing a sense of worth and respect into these transitions.
