The city of Brentwood has initiated the construction of a new Costco warehouse, with plans for its doors to open in early 2025, according to a report from NBC Bay Area. City officials and the Brentwood community are welcoming the addition as a significant boon, anticipating reduced travel times for local shoppers who previously had to commute to nearby towns for their bulk shopping at Costco.
Mayor Joel Bryant expressed the community's enthusiasm, "Residents of Brentwood have excitedly awaited the arrival of Costco for far too long," as Contra Costa News quoted. He further elaborated on the positive impact the store is expected to have by stating, "We are delighted to welcome this retailer to our town which will undoubtedly reduce the trips for area residents and generate much needed revenues for our city." Adding to this, City Manager Tim Ogden stated, "Costco will represent one of our largest employers and tax generators in town" and highlighted the strategic extension of Sand Creek Road as a measure to manage traffic effectively.
The warehouse's location in Brentwood is strategically significant. It is positioned to serve the 66,000 local residents and neighboring communities, ending the over 10-mile journey for many to the nearest stores in Antioch and Tracy, according to Contra Costa News. Ogden mentioned that the Costco development is one of the early non-residential incursions into the city's Innovation Center, indicating that more such projects may soon follow suit.
Furthermore, city planners are actively laying the groundwork for a new mixed-use town center shaped around the Costco development; this location will potentially feature between 200 to 300 townhomes and apartments alongside a robust 100,000 square feet of retail and office space in a Main Street layout, thereby fostering a vibrant new hub for business and community life, according to NBC Bay Area.
