On a seemingly routine Tuesday afternoon, the streets of the Pinch District in Memphis were disrupted when a Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) bus collided with a Memphis Police Department (MPD) cruiser. The incident, which took place at the intersection of North Second Street and Shadyac Avenue at 3:15 p.m., resulted in injuries to four individuals, reports Action News 5. Each of the injured was transported to local hospitals, fortunately in non-critical condition.
As the details of the collision continue to surface, differing accounts note the number of individuals injured in the event, with FOX13 Memphis stating five people were injured while other outlets report four; despite the numerical discrepancy, it is confirmed that the involved officer did not sustain injuries. The MPD has yet to release additional information regarding the cause of the crash or the condition of the bus passengers and the police officer remains unharmed, adding to a web of concerns surrounding public safety and transportation efficacy in the city.
Following the collision, the intersection was subject to traffic delays and investigative operations as authorities worked to piece together the cascade of events. Local Memphis shared that each of the individuals taken to the hospital is expected to make full recoveries.
