Early yesterday morning in Pleasanton, an incident led to a DUI arrest after a concerned citizen flagged what appeared to be an unconscious driver. At about 6:50 AM, dispatchers took a call about a driver asleep in a stopped car on Muirwood Drive and W. Las Positas Blvd. Police officers observed the man in the driver's seat and determined that the car showed signs of a previous collision, including a damaged tire.
When the officers attempted to wake the man and requested he exit the vehicle, he refused and seemed visibly intoxicated. A knife discovered on the car floor escalated the situation, leading to additional officers, clinicians, and a crisis negotiator being called to the location. Despite a 90-minute negotiation by police personnel, the man remained resistant.
Following prolonged efforts to resolve the standoff peacefully, officers eventually took the individual into custody without incident. According to the Pleasanton Police Department, he was booked into Santa Rita Jail on charges of driving under the influence and resisting arrest. The police department applauded the community's vigilance in the Facebook update.
