In a dedicated push to combat human trafficking, the Portland Police Bureau's Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) conducted an operation along the notorious corridor of Northeast 82nd Avenue. As detailed by the Portland Police Bureau, the mission on July 18, rounded up several individuals on charges ranging from commercial sexual solicitation to reckless driving.
The wide-scale effort, designed to specifically target potential traffickers and aid victims, resulted in one gun being confiscated, as per the Portland Police Bureau. Various divisions of the police force collaborated to effectively carry out the operation, which led to arrests and citations for crimes associated with unlawful prostitution and sex buying. Notable amongst those cited or arrested were Bashar Bashardust, Soi Choi, Agustin Solis Colin, and Pablo Galicia Martinez. In a related activity, Kyree Jackson and Julius Mitchell faced unrelated charges, including several warrants and disorderly conduct.
Reflecting the depth of their commitment to victim support, HTU coordinated a welfare check on an endangered 18-year-old at risk for sex trafficking, working in conjunction with detectives from outside jurisdictions, according to the Portland Police Bureau. The ongoing struggle against human trafficking in Portland underscores a persistent issue, survivors often show reluctance to step forward due to trauma bonds and fear of retribution.
