The Philadelphia Phillies have hit a home run in player selections for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, sending a franchise-record seven players to the showcase event in Arlington, Texas, this July.
As the MLB unveiled its roster of pitchers and reserves, the Phillies' formidable pitching staff emerged front and center with starters Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler and relievers Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman earning All-Star nods, CBS News Philadelphia reported; they will join fellow Phillies Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Alec Bohm on the field, amid excitement for the Midsummer Classic the starting lineup that was packed, power-hitting and skillful play seems to have defined the Phillies' season thus far.
This year marks the first All-Star selection for Suarez, Strahm, and Hoffman, with Harper celebrating his eighth and Wheeler his second the latter having previously been an All-Star in the 2021 season with the Phillies as per FOX29. Suarez and Wheeler are currently being talked about as National League Cy-Young candidates, thanks to their ERA rankings among the top ten in the MLB and the Phillies sporting a 58-32 record, the best in the league.
Jeff Hoffman, who confessed to being nervous about the selection, said in an emotional moment, "I was shaking a lot," and that "It took me a while to calm down. I called my wife. Everybody is really happy -- and happy to cancel our All-Star [break] plans, and get to hang out and play baseball instead," according to an MLB.com report. The selection announcement came ahead of the team's 6-0 loss to the Braves with previous notable player inclusions from years past echoing the Phillies' historic accomplishments though none reaching the high mark set by today's squad.
