A registered sex offender was taken into custody this week after being accused of stalking a 10-year-old girl at a Home Depot in Miami-Dade County. According to a report from NBC Miami, 58-year-old Kevin S. Hurley was arrested yesterday on the charge of aggravated stalking of a minor, with his bond set at $10,000 during a court appearance today.
The incident, which took place at the Home Depot located at 19400 SW 106th Ave, was reported on the Fourth of July but came to a head tomorrow, as per an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News. Hurley, who had previously served time for sexual battery and molestation of a child, is on probation and subject to GPS monitoring. Conditions of his probation include the stipulation that he is not allowed to have unsupervised contact with minors, a condition that seems he may have violated at the home improvement store.
The mother of the 10-year-old girl became concerned when Hurley approached her daughter at a counter and commented, "I love your Mickey ears, and I think you are too big to be in that shopping cart," then followed this with "I think you are so beautiful," after completing his purchase. Hurley's behavior, described as "erratic", included pacing back and forth while keeping a watch on the victim. This activity was captured on surveillance cameras, and the mother reacted by taking pictures of Hurley and his car's license plate.
After the incident, the mother, not feeling safe, sought assistance from a Home Depot employee to escort her and her daughter to their vehicle. Hurley, who had parked illegally in front of the exit door, began following them in his car, but was deterred once he was confronted by another man in a truck, records show. Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida Department of Corrections records further confirm Hurley's status as a registered sex offender and his previous incarcerations. He was arrested following this recent alleged incident and was booked into Miami-Dade jail.
