A high-speed chase erupted in Los Angeles after a robbery suspect fled authorities, with a chilling twist: a baby was in the car. The pursuit began when the Hawthorne Police Department spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to an armed robbery in Beverly Hills, leading to a high-octane chase that blazed through the streets, as reported by CBS News Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department took over the pursuit, which spanned several neighborhoods and saw the suspect exceeding 60 mph, driving on the wrong side of the road, and blowing through red lights during rush hour traffic.
At one point during the chaotic scene, the suspect was live-streaming the incident and a woman's voice could be heard pleading with him to stop while the baby sat in the backseat; the live-stream added a surreal layer to an already harrowing pursuit, Deputy Tony Lomedico expressed shock upon discovering the suspect was broadcasting the chase with his own child in the vehicle, he said "It's crazy to think that not only is this guy driving like a madman, not only does he have his two-month-old daughter in the car and his child's mother, but he's taking the time to get on his phone and livestream the whole thing," according to an interview with ABC7.
The pursuit concluded in a dead end within a Blair Hills neighborhood; deputies quickly secured the area and a standoff ensued, as per KTLA. Emerging from the Kia sedan clutching the infant, the suspect was soon joined by a woman exiting the rear seat, he then hugged and kissed his girlfriend before ultimately surrendering to the authorities. Deputy Adriana Martinez, who cared for the infant after the arrest, told NBC Los Angeles, "My motherly insects kicked in and I was just trying to soothe her, stop her from crying." The Culver City Fire Department inspected the child, who appeared unharmed.
Following the arrest, the suspect was identified as 21-year-old Daiyaan Henderson; he faces multiple charges including carjacking and kidnapping - despite the fact the woman in the car was revealed to be the mother of his child and was not arrested, having been determined to be a victim in the incident, her subsequent treatment by the deputies included food, medical attention, and a diaper change for the child before she fell asleep and was later reunited with her mother, as officials released her from custody recognizing her as a kidnapping victim.
