The Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills has reopened, infused with the hopes of healing and recovery nearly three weeks after a mass shooting disrupted the jovial atmosphere synonymous with the family-friendly site. "Evil will not win here," said the City of Rochester, as per WWJ950, outlining steps taken to remove physical reminders of a tragedy that left nine injured, including a mother and her two young children.
June 15 marked a day of terror when gunfire broke out at the popular splash pad, with a sheriff's official labeling the incident as "random." As per the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, all but one of the victims have since been discharged from the hospital. The 8-year-old boy, critically injured during the event, is now "resting comfortably" at home, while his mother continues to recover in the hospital after heroically shielding her children, according to WWJ950.
The reopening of the splash pad signifies a step toward reclaiming normalcy, a gesture embracing the community's resilience. The City of Rochester Hills expressed this sentiment in a Facebook post, stating, "We know their recovery both mentally and physically will be long, and we will continue to stand by their side through it all." The post also honored the victims and fallen OCSO Deputy Brad Reckling, acknowledging that while the Festival of the Hills event "felt different," it was a necessary step forward.
Rochester Hills officials have assured the public that extra safety measures, including an increased police presence, will be implemented. Alongside the assurance of heightened security, informational signs about mental health resources provided by the Oakland Community Health Network will also be present. The city's focus extends beyond the physical to encompass the mental well-being of its denizens, in efforts to foster a supportive environment for all affected.
