As the Fourth of July weekend festivities kick off, Sacramento County officials have laid down the law, reminding revelers that alcohol will not be permitted along the lower American River and Sherman Island. The ban, which comes amidst concerns over safety and public order, will be in strict effect from July 4 through July 7, FOX40 has reported. Officials have made it clear that the ban extends to all - those on shore and those planning to enjoy the water.
Park rangers and first responders are set to forcefully ensure the implementation of these measures, particularly due to the added risk posed by the intense heat expected this weekend. It's part of a regular protocol to ensure the safety of holiday-goers, but with the thermometer rising, it becomes even more essential. Sergeant Elmer Marzan of Sacramento County Regional Parks emphasized, according to CBS13, "That helps us immensely with the raft take-outs at River Bend [Park]. We used to have fights, light big brawls out there because people were getting drunk."
The region has seen its fair share of alcohol-related accidents in the past, prompting stringent precautions by authorities. This stretch of the American River, about 20 miles from Hazel Avenue to the confluence with the Sacramento River, is particularly popular with rafters and has been the scene of many such incidents. Coupled with the festivities, which include rafting activities supported by local businesses, the need for vigilance is ever more pressing.
County officials also urge the public to put on a life jacket before stepping into the river. Life jackets are available for free loan at various points along the American River Parkway. "It is too hot to be sitting out here getting drunk and then trying to go in the water," said Mia Byrum, a visitor to the river area, in a statement obtained by CBS13. Even with slower currents compared to earlier in the season, submerged hazards remain a significant danger. "They come up against a tree that is submerged and they just pop," Sergeant Marzan told CBS13. "And if you are not wearing a life vest, then that becomes a problem."
