A pedestrian fatality has cast a somber shadow over Marion County following a collision early Sunday morning. According to KOIN, at approximately 10 a.m., calls flooded into the 911 dispatch reporting a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on State Street near 47th Avenue Southeast, within the borders of Salem.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office along with emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene where lifesaving attempts were undertaken, but ultimately, a 61-year-old Salem resident, Michael Sissell, was pronounced deceased on the spot. "Deputies and emergency medical services personnel responded to the scene, lifesaving efforts were attempted at the scene, tragically the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene," the sheriff’s office said, as per KOIN.
Details provided by KPTV suggest that involved in the incident was a 53-year-old driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement officials. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, maneuvered a silver four-door BMW heading east on State Street when the collision occurred. The authorities, as yet, have not issued any charges or citations associated with the event.
Investigative efforts by the Marion County CRASH Team led to a temporary closure of State Street between 46th and 47th avenues, impacting traffic for several hours, as reported by the Statesman Journal. The factors contributing to the tragedy remain unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. The Sheriff's Office has not yet provided clarity on what led the diet to the crash.
