A Salem physical education teacher is facing severe allegations involving an attempt to engage in sexual activities with a minor after being caught in an undercover police sting. Darren Benedick, 42, from Salem, Massachusetts, was arrested and arraigned on charges of child enticement and dissemination of matter harmful to minors, confirmed by the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
Benedick, who is employed at Salem Academy Charter School as a gym and health teacher, was reportedly caught after he attempted to meet someone whom he believed was a 14-year-old girl for a sexual encounter. This individual he aimed to connect with was indeed an undercover officer posing as a minor in a "teens-only" chat room—a detail obtained through statements from the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, as reported by NBC Boston. The operation led to Benedick’s arrest when he arrived for the meet-up yesterday.
According to NBC Boston, the district attorney’s office disclosed, "The defendant is alleged to have engaged in online conversations with the undercover officer expressing a desire to meet in person and engage in sexual activities, to have sent an obscene image to the officer, and to have described the sex acts that he wished to perform." Authorities have emphasized that there are currently no allegations involving students at Salem Academy Charter School.
Following his arraignment, Benedick’s bail was set at $5,000, with conditions including GPS monitoring, home confinement, and an explicit order not to contact children. Boston.com reports that Salem Academy Charter School took immediate administrative action against Benedick, placing him on leave. The school’s Executive Director, Stephanie Callahan, assured that they are in active communication with the police and will cooperate with the investigation. "Authorities stated they have not received any allegations that Salem Academy students were involved," Callahan added.
Reports from MassLive further detail that Benedick’s arrest was a cooperative effort, involving both the Newbury Police and Salem Police departments. He pleaded not guilty in court and is being held in the Essex County House of Correction. The case has drawn attention to the ongoing issues of internet safety and the protection of minors from online predators.
