Sad news came out of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park this weekend. Officials announced the passing of Winston, a 52-year-old western lowland gorilla known for his gentle demeanor and remarkable longevity. Winston had been grappling with a series of health issues, including heart and kidney disease. He was a long-time resident of the park and a favorite among visitors and staff alike.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park highlighted the decline in Winston’s health, which their wildlife care teams monitored. Despite treatments for his heart condition, degenerative joint disease, and kidney issues, Winston's condition worsened. 

Known as one of the world's oldest silverbacks, his death leaves a palpable absence within his family group and among the countless people who cared for and about him. The Safari Park describes him as representing "the best of us," underscoring his significance to gorilla conservation efforts worldwide.
