According to the City of San Diego's official website, hate crimes in the city surged by 73% last year. With the recent incidents in Hillcrest, where individuals were targeted by passing vehicles, the deployment of sophisticated surveillance is seen not just as a deterrent but as a critical investigative tool. At the same time, the new technology, which has been rolled out to 500 locations so far, has already been instrumental in solving about 129 offenses involving threats or damage to persons and properties, according to SDPD reports.
Drawbacks in the form of infrastructural challenges were encountered during the initial deployment, leaving 42 proposed sites without updates due to feasibility issues.
