As of July 1, San Marcos has kicked off a pilot program to broadly expand SPIN Electric Scooter services. The program is set to last six months and is designed to widen both the operating area and times for the scooters, aiming to offer increased transportation options within the city. Noteworthy is the inclusion of the east side of IH-35 in the service area, which now encompasses Aquarena Springs Drive and Uhland Road, as detailed by the City of San Marcos.
In an attempt to more effectively integrate the scooters into the city's transportation ecosystem, SPIN has decided to make them available 24/7. The initiative was given the green light by the San Marcos City Council earlier this May, according to the City of San Marcos. Additionally, riders returning scooters to one of the new deployment zones will be able to receive 20 percent off their trip, a move likely to encourage proper parking habits and potentially reduce scooter clutter.
Charles Campbell, Multimodal Parking Initiatives Manager, stated, "This new service will provide reliable alternative transportation options to our community that meets City Council’s strategic initiative for multimodal transportation," as per the City of San Marcos. He pointed out that this service will especially benefit Eastside residents by supplying a convenient option for those "last-mile" trips. SPIN's dedicated mobile application is where residents and visitors can go to reserve an electric scooter.
