In a lead-up to the Fourth of July celebrations, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office has made notable strides in its crackdown on illicit fireworks and firearms. According to an official press release, authorities have conducted a series of buyback events in June, which successfully removed over 700 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives from the streets of San Mateo County.
The Sheriff's Office Gang Intelligence and Investigations Unit (GIU) was tipped off in May that fireworks were being illegally sold from a residence in East Palo Alto. The subsequent investigation led to a coordinated effort to fully address the issue, with detectives conducting thorough investigative work. On June 19, the GIU spearheaded a multi-agency operation, which included the San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force, the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force, and the East Palo Alto Police Department, to execute a search warrant. The crackdown at a home on O'Connor St. resulted in the discovery of illegal fireworks and two unregistered firearms.
47-year-old Froylan Vazquez and 23-year-old Antonio Torres-Vasquez, both residents of East Palo Alto, faced legal repercussions due to this operation. Vazquez was arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on charges of owning a stolen firearm and illegal fireworks possession. In contrast, Torres-Vasquez was cited for possession of illegal fireworks. "Ahead of the July Fourth holiday, the Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents of its zero-tolerance approach to addressing fireworks, which are illegal in nearly all of San Mateo County", stated the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office continues to emphasize its strict policy against fireworks, urging the community to report any illegal activities.
