A Santa Ana high school coach has been apprehended following allegations of engaging in inappropriate communications with a former student, with intentions that police describe as sexual in nature. Aaron Raya, 28, a coaching staff member at Godinez High School, was taken into custody and holds a bail set at $100,000, as detailed by FOX LA.
The situation came to light after the mother of an underage girl discovered text messages between her daughter and Raya that were deemed inappropriate. This revelation prompted a police investigation, which later expanded as detectives unearthed allegations from two additional victims, also former students. As FOXLA reports, these students claimed that Raya made sexual advances towards them as well.
Particularly distressing in this case, is the position of trust that Raya held. Not only was he the head track and field coach but also took on the role as a football coach and a substitute teacher, responsibilities that allowed him close contact with students. Police told ABC7 that Raya started speaking to the first victim about track events during the school year, only to intensify the nature of his messages after she graduated.
