In a scene that resembled a tech-savvy eye in the sky, the Santa Monica Police Department's deployment of drones snagged a car thief during the high tide of holiday festivities this Fourth of July. ABC7 reported that one diligent drone caught a suspect red-handed as he was breaking into an SUV, and then a pickup truck in a beach parking lot.
Flying home from a call, the drone, guided by the police department’s sworn officer pilot, happened to cast its gaze on a man conspicuously moving through vehicles with intent. Santa Monica police have leaned into drone technology to bolster their fight against crime, a system that on July 4 proved its merit. Through the lens of the drone's camera, the actions of a man donning a backpack and hoodie unfurged, culminating in the audacious punch of a vehicle's lock. After the man settled in another vehicle, officers, directed by the unwavering aerial guide, made their approach and arrested him, discovering numerous stolen goods.
The suspect's misdeed was captured by the drone as it hovered over Lot 1 North, located by the effervescent Santa Monica Pier. In the footage, the suspect is seen using a screwdriver to gain illegal entry into the vehicles. According to KTLA, the drone pilot alerted patrol units, who then found the man rifling through the truck, the second vehicle he targeted in his spree.
Launched in November 2022, the Santa Monica PD’s Drone as First Responder Program drew inspiration from Chula Vista's pioneering program. The drone is dispatched from the roof of the Public Safety Facility and can soar to the scene promptly. Santa Monica PD said in a social media post, that the drone pilot not only gathers situational footage but also "provide updates, check for suspects fleeing and give a direction of travel, and guide in responding officers." This multi-faceted aerial perspective is credited with heightening the odds of concluding incidents without incident.
The introduction of drones into police work in Santa Monica and elsewhere is a testament to the evolving landscape of law enforcement tools. While the efficiency of these drones was on full display over the holiday weekend, capturing a thief in the busy blur of beachgoers, it also ushers in a discussion on the modernized surveillance tools at the disposal of the officers sworn to protect and serve.
