Amid sharp criticisms and bipartisan demands for action, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has encountered intense pressure to resign following a significant security breach that resulted in an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. During a recent congressional hearing, Cheatle admitted to substantial failures on the part of her agency. Cheatle was quoted saying, "The Secret Service's solemn mission is to protect our nation's leaders. On July 13th, we failed," according to WTTW.
Illinois Senator Dick Durbin added his voice to those calling for Cheatle to step down, firmly expressing to The Chicago Tribune that Cheatle should "Yes. And I think she ultimately will" resign.
Across the aisle, Republican Representatives, including House Oversight Committee members, have also echoed the need for Cheatle's resignation. Cheatle, in her defense, has pledged to "move heaven and earth" to prevent another such incident—but despite her three decades at the agency, these assurances appear insufficient. Director Cheatle also acknowledged during her testimony that the Secret Service was alerted multiple times to a suspicious person before the gunfire erupted, yet no clear threat was communicated in time to prevent the attack, WTTW reported.
