Sonoma County Regional Parks has expanded its territory with the acquisition of the 100-Acre Ranch, tipping the scales of Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve to over 3,700 acres. This piece of land, although not as vast in its own right, is a critical linchpin. It joins a massive 11,000 acres of protected greenery, making a buffer against the urban sprawl and a playground for the environmentally inclined.

The benefits are twofold — preserving scenic horizons and expanding recreational avenues for public enjoyment. "Protecting Sonoma Valley's rural character and ecological health is a top priority," stated Sonoma County Supervisor Susan Gorin, as per Sonoma County Regional Parks. This acquisition promises magnified natural beauty and adds defense against unnecessary development, which is crucial for maintaining wildlife corridors and fleshing out future recreational opportunities.

With a price tag of $555,000, this land was situated cozily next to December 2023’s acquisition of Salt Creek Addition, which was previously a working ranch owned by generations of the Rasmason family. David Rabbitt, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, highlighted the strategic role of the park in wildfire resilience. “By protecting more land, we can better prepare for future wildfires, fight climate change and keep our environment healthy and safe for the future,” he said, as per Sonoma County Regional Parks.
